NHS Band 8 Pay 2026/27

NHS Band 8 is not one single pay scale: Agenda for Change splits it into four sub-bands, 8a, 8b, 8c and 8d, each with its own three pay points and covering increasingly senior specialist and management roles in England. For 2026/27, full-time Band 8 salary spans £57,528 at 8a entry to £108,814 at 8d top.

NHS Band 8 is four sub-bands, not one

Unlike every other Agenda for Change band, Band 8 is divided into four sub-bands: 8a, 8b, 8c and 8d, each covering a distinct salary range and level of seniority, typically senior specialist practitioners, service or department managers, and senior managers. Each sub-band has its own three pay points: Entry, Intermediate and Top.

Figures below are full-time equivalent, based on standard Agenda for Change hours of 37.5 a week. This page covers NHS England Agenda for Change staff only, not doctors, dentists, Very Senior Managers, or staff in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Use the NHS Pay Calculator

NHS Pension across Band 8

Most Band 8 staff are automatically enrolled in the NHS Pension Scheme. Your contribution rate is tiered and based on your actual annual pensionable pay, so it varies across the Band 8 sub-bands and pay points rather than being one fixed Band 8 rate.

At the lowest Band 8 pay point (8a entry), the estimated contribution rate is 10.7%; at the highest (8d top), it is 12.5%.

NHS Pension contributions are deducted from your pay before Income Tax is calculated, so you receive tax relief automatically through payroll; they are not deducted before National Insurance or student loan calculations, which use your full gross pay.

Income Tax across Band 8

Income Tax is charged on your pay after your NHS Pension contribution. Across the Band 8 range, taxable income sits within the higher-rate band at every sub-band and pay point in the standard, full-time scenario on this page; the £100,000 Personal Allowance taper is not automatically reached, even at 8d top.

At 8d top, standard scenario, estimated taxable income after NHS Pension is £95,212.25, below the £100,000 taper threshold, so the full £12,570 Personal Allowance is kept.
Adding Inner London HCAS at 8d top pushes taxable income to an estimated £102,865.00, above the £100,000 threshold, reducing the Personal Allowance to an estimated £11,138.00. HCAS, overtime or other taxable income can bring the highest Band 8 pay points into the taper even where the pay point alone does not.

Band 8 part-time pay

Standard Agenda for Change full-time hours are 37.5 a week. Part-time basic salary is calculated proportionally: your contracted hours divided by 37.5, multiplied by the full-time equivalent salary. The examples below use Band 8a entry, the lowest Band 8 pay point; the same proportional calculation applies at every Band 8 sub-band and pay point.

Band 8a entry, part-time examples
Contracted hoursActual basic salaryEstimated monthly take-home
30 hours£46,022.40£2,753.96
22.5 hours£34,516.80£2,173.32
18.75 hours£28,764.00£1,894.50

Band 8 pay in London (HCAS)

The High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS), also called London weighting, is an additional payment for staff working in or near London, calculated as a percentage of basic salary and subject to a minimum and maximum for each zone. HCAS is based on your workplace location, not your home address, and is pensionable, taxable and subject to National Insurance in the normal way. The examples below show 8a entry and 8d top, the lowest and highest Band 8 pay points, to illustrate the range.

Student loans and Band 8 pay

Student loan repayments reduce take-home pay and are calculated on your full gross pay, in the same way as National Insurance, not on your pay after pension contributions, at every Band 8 sub-band and pay point. The NHS Pay Calculator supports Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4, Plan 5 and the Postgraduate Loan, including both an undergraduate plan and a Postgraduate Loan at the same time.

Band 8a entry, effect of a student loan
ScenarioEstimated monthly take-home
No student loan£3,352.53
Plan 2 undergraduate loan£3,141.46

Band 8 pay progression

Progression within a Band 8 sub-band works the same way as other Agenda for Change bands: moving from Entry to Intermediate to Top is normally linked to time in post and satisfactory performance, in line with the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook and local trust arrangements, not a fixed annual increase.

Moving from one Band 8 sub-band to the next, for example from 8a to 8b, is different: it is not pay-point progression within a band. It normally means being appointed to a role graded at the higher sub-band, in the same way as moving from Band 7 to Band 8a, using the NHS Job Evaluation Scheme.
