NHS Pay Calculator

Estimate take-home pay for NHS England staff on Agenda for Change, for 2026/27, 2025/26 or 2024/25. Select your band and pay point rather than entering a salary directly, and this calculator works out your gross pay, NHS Pension contribution, tax, National Insurance and student loan. This calculator covers England Agenda for Change staff only, not doctors, dentists, Very Senior Managers, or staff in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Your NHS role

Band 1 is closed to new entrants and is not offered here. Only the pay points that genuinely exist for each band are shown.
Standard Agenda for Change full-time hours are 37.5 a week. Enter your own contracted hours if you work part-time.
Based on your workplace location, not your home address.

Pension and loans

Most NHS staff are automatically enrolled. Select No to see your estimate without pension contributions.
Select the undergraduate plan that applies to you, if any. You cannot have more than one undergraduate plan at once. Plan 5 repayments began on 6 April 2026. Selecting Plan 5 for 2024/25 or 2025/26 will show £0 repayment.
You can have a Postgraduate Loan at the same time as an undergraduate plan; the two are repaid separately and stack.

This is an estimate for general guidance, not an official NHS calculator, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NHS. It does not include overtime, unsocial-hours enhancements, on-call payments or recruitment and retention premia. Your actual payslip can differ due to your tax code, local arrangements, prior-period payroll adjustments, other benefits or deductions, and individual circumstances.

What Agenda for Change is

Agenda for Change is the national pay and grading system for most NHS staff in England, covering nurses, healthcare assistants, allied health professionals, administrative and clerical staff, scientists and many other roles. It does not cover doctors, dentists or Very Senior Managers, who have separate pay arrangements.

NHS Bands explained

Agenda for Change groups roles into bands, from Band 2 to Band 9, reflecting the level of responsibility, skill and experience required. Band 1 is closed to new entrants. Higher bands generally mean greater responsibility and higher pay.

Pay points and progression

Within most bands, staff progress through pay points over time, normally entry, then intermediate, then top, though Band 2 has a single pay point and Bands 3 and 4 have only entry and top. This calculator only ever offers the pay points that genuinely exist for the band you select.

NHS full-time and part-time pay

Standard Agenda for Change full-time hours are 37.5 a week. Part-time pay is calculated proportionally: your full-time equivalent (FTE) percentage is your contracted hours divided by 37.5, and your actual basic salary is your full-time equivalent salary multiplied by that percentage.

NHS Pension employee contributions

Most NHS staff are automatically enrolled in the NHS Pension Scheme. Your contribution rate depends on your actual annual pensionable pay, which is your basic salary plus High Cost Area Supplement if applicable, not your full-time equivalent salary. This matters for part-time staff: your contribution tier is based on what you actually earn, so working part-time can place you in a lower tier than a full-time colleague on the same band and point.

NHS Pension contributions are deducted from your pay before Income Tax is calculated, so you automatically receive tax relief at your own rate through payroll. They are not deducted before National Insurance or student loan calculations, which are based on your full gross pay.

This calculator estimates your employee contribution only. It does not calculate your retirement benefits and is not an NHS Pension benefits calculator.

HCAS and London weighting

The High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS), also called London weighting, is an additional payment for staff working in or near London, calculated as a percentage of basic salary, subject to a minimum and maximum payment for each zone. HCAS is pensionable and is taxed and subject to National Insurance in the same way as basic salary. For part-time staff, HCAS is pro-rated in the same way as basic salary.

Income Tax and National Insurance

Income Tax and employee National Insurance are calculated using the same rates and thresholds that apply to any employee in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Income Tax is charged on your pay after your NHS Pension contribution; National Insurance is charged on your full gross pay before any pension deduction.

Student loans

Student loan and Postgraduate Loan repayments are calculated on your full gross pay, in the same way as National Insurance, not on your pay after pension contributions. You can have an undergraduate plan and a Postgraduate Loan at the same time; the two repayments are calculated separately and added together.

Why actual payslips can differ from this estimate

This calculator provides an annual estimate. Your actual payslip can differ because of your specific tax code, local trust arrangements, prior-period payroll adjustments and back pay, overtime, unsocial-hours enhancements, on-call payments, recruitment and retention premia, benefits in kind, salary sacrifice schemes, or other individual deductions, none of which are modelled here.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is NHS Band 5 take-home pay?
It depends on your pay point, hours, HCAS zone, pension membership and student loan. Select Band 5 and your pay point above for an estimate; see the worked example on this page for a full-time entry-point figure.
What is NHS Band 6 salary?
For 2026/27, Band 6 ranges from £39,959 at entry to £48,117 at the top point, before any HCAS. Select Band 6 above for a full take-home pay estimate.
How does NHS part-time pay work?
Your basic salary is your full-time equivalent salary multiplied by your contracted hours divided by 37.5. HCAS is pro-rated the same way. Your NHS Pension contribution tier is based on your actual part-time pay, not your full-time equivalent salary.
How much do I pay into the NHS Pension?
It depends on your actual annual pensionable pay (basic salary plus HCAS), tiered from 5.2% up to 12.5%. Enter your details above to see your estimated contribution.
Is London weighting included?
Yes, if you select an HCAS zone (Inner London, Outer London or Fringe). If your workplace is outside these areas, select Outside HCAS area.
Is NHS pension taken before tax?
Yes. NHS Pension contributions are deducted from your pay before Income Tax is calculated, so you get tax relief automatically. They are not deducted before National Insurance or student loan calculations.
Does the calculator include student loans?
Yes. Select your undergraduate plan and whether you also have a Postgraduate Loan; the two are calculated separately and added together if both apply.
Why is my NHS payslip different from this estimate?

Does this calculator cover doctors or dentists?
No. This calculator covers Agenda for Change staff only. Doctors and dentists have separate pay and contract arrangements.
Does this calculator cover Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?
No. This calculator covers NHS England Agenda for Change staff only.
