Council Tax is usually billed over 10 monthly instalments, though your council sets the exact months. You have the right to request 12 monthly instalments instead, in writing to your council. Each payment is smaller, but the total amount you pay over the year is exactly the same either way.

The 10-month column reflects the usual default. The 12-month column applies only if you've arranged 12 monthly instalments with your council.

How Council Tax bands work

Every domestic property is placed into a valuation band based on its value on a fixed historic date, not its current market value. Band D is the reference point: lower bands pay a fixed fraction of the Band D rate, higher bands pay more.

What is included in this bill

The figures above are the full bill for each band: Birmingham's own charge, plus county, police and fire precepts, plus an area-average parish or community council precept. An individual parish's own precept can differ slightly from this area average.

Discounts, reductions and premiums

The figures above are the standard full charge and do not include any discount or premium. A 25% Single Person Discount applies if you are the only adult living in the property. Council Tax Support (or Council Tax Reduction) is a means-tested discount administered by Birmingham. Empty-home and second-home premiums can add up to 100% for some properties. Contact Birmingham directly for your own entitlement.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What Council Tax band is my property in Birmingham?
Check the official VOA Council Tax band checker linked above the table on this page; this page does not look up a specific property's band.
Does the Birmingham figure include the West Midlands Police precept?
Yes. As with every English billing authority, the figures above blend Birmingham City Council's own charge with the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner precept, the West Midlands Fire Service precept, and an area-average parish precept where applicable.
How do I get a discount if I live alone?
Contact Birmingham City Council directly to apply for the 25% Single Person Discount; it is not applied to the figures shown on this page.
How is the year-over-year change calculated?
The change is the difference between Birmingham's published Band D Council Tax for each year, this year's figure minus last year's, expressed as both a cash amount and a percentage. No other calculation is applied.
Where does last year's figure come from?
The same official sourcing standard as this year's figures: Birmingham's published Band D Council Tax level for 2025/26, from GOV.UK, the Welsh Government or the Scottish Government, independently verified against the published statistics.
Does the comparison include discounts or premiums?
No. Both 2025/26 and 2026/27 show the standard full charge for each band, the same basis used throughout this page. Single Person Discount, Council Tax Support and empty-home or second-home premiums are not applied to either year's figure.

This is an estimate for general guidance only and is not financial or legal advice. It does not apply any discount, reduction or premium, and it does not determine which band a specific property is in. Use the full Council Tax Calculator for other councils and bands.
